Federal Information Minister, Ms. Maryam Aurangzeb and her predecessor Mr. Pervaiz Rasheed made public pronouncements about legislation on right to information at federal level. As things stand at the moment, government formed a committee to reconcile Right to Information Bill approved by Senate Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting and Right of Access to Information Bill, drafted by federal bureaucracy. This committee has given its recommendations to the government. The Right to Information Bill approved by the Senate committee meets standards of effective right to information legislation and was highly ranked by Centre for Law and Democracy. However, Right of Access to Information Bill is structurally flawed and cannot be improved in a manner that it meets standards of effective right to information legislation even if committee recommendations are incorporated. In light of these developments, Coalition on Right to Information will be presenting its Charter of Demands to federal government by holding press conference on April 19, 2017 at National Press Club, Islamabad.
