Appointment of Federal Ombudsman demanded

Since the end of October 2010, the position of Federal Ombudsman is lying vacant with not even an acting Ombudsman appointed by the president, which is an obligation under the article 7 of the 1983 Order. In the absence of the Ombudsman, the only remedy available for the aggrieved is the mediation mechanism offered by the investigation officers under the powers conferred by the article 33 of the Order; ‘informal resolution of disputes’. However, the cases that can not be resolved through this informal dispute resolution mechanism are usually the ones most critical and thus requiring the most immediate attention.

Forum formed for democratic policing

The Pakistan Forum on Democratic Policing (PFDP) was formed here on Tuesday to advocate the agenda at national and provincial levels for constitution of a legal framework, which enshrines true aspirations of democracy within the institution of police, in order to improve the performance and enhance the accountability. The forum was officially launched at a ceremony jointly organised by groups working for democratic policing- an alliance of Rozan, CPDI, Shehri CBE, Aurat Foundation, Individual Land, Shirkat Gah, HRCP, SPARC and SPO.

With the support of Commonwealth Secretariat, Centre for Peace and Development Initiatives (CPDI) is putting into operation a situational analysis study on “Civil Paths to Peace” in Pakistan with regard to the situation and nature of the conflicts , initiatives on respect, understanding, dialogue, tolerance, multiple identities and peace issues.
